Week 2

Week 2 Wrap-Up

07/03/20 13:41

As this week comes to a close, I can say with conviction that becoming a voice artist is definitely not for the weak-willed. It takes a lot of time-management and a plethora of skills in order to get through a project. And in our case, we have been going through one right after another.

What's more, the assignments were given off-handedly, and pretty much left for our interpretation. And then SUDDENLY, more details are given at the last minute.... heading towards a completely different (and opposite) direction. I am thinking that these were deliberate and reflective of real-world situations wherein your client will go and tell you one thing, then come the last few minutes, drops a bombshell of information on you. Can we still make a course correction in time? That is the challenge!

In any case, through these projects/assignments, I have learned and honed a lot of audio and video-editing skills, most of which are being literally used for the first time. Sure, I've imagined them being used this way before, but having to actually do it gives it a more fulfilling and right-here-right-now kind of feeling. The type of feeling that says, this is what it takes to be a voice artist.

I've also realized that I can't do so many voices as I hoped, most likely because I've never really had to use them, but my arsenal of voices are pretty much limited to announcer and narrator types.. with some character voices strewn in for good measure. I still have to improve my inflections and voice acting -- letting your voice carry over the emotions of any given piece of copy. I realized this while listening to Sir Choy's delivery of the Dunkin Donuts speech. There really is a lot of artistry involved in delivering the lines... which is an altogether way than just reading them out with emotions and inflections. There are pauses... involved... and tonality... that reading something emotionally doesn't bring. This shows to prove why HE is The VoiceMaster.

I find myself challenged and at the same time inspired to get to his level. Oh the things one has to learn and practice just to get to a fraction of his skills.

Looking forward to tomorrow's workshop!
